Who Am I
Boitumelo Sehlake is a young woman with a passion for STEM education and youth development. She holds an Honours Degree in Geology and is currently studying towards a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering. Having had an opportunity to work for an oil and gas company overseas, she was fascinated by how energy works and affects our day-to-day lives.
Through this work experience she has come to a realization that there is a lack of energy awareness education in South Africa and how people in general relate to the sources of energy and their uses. Boitumelo Sehlake decided that it is time our youth and communities learned about the energy industry, an industry that has seen so much of our country’s development goals get accomplished, an industry that has helped in putting this country to a level of a being the most developed country on the continent. Boitumelo decided that it is time our youth and communities learned about the energy industry, an industry that has seen so much of our country’s development goals get accomplished, an industry that has helped in putting this country to a level of being the most developed country on the continent. Youth unemployment in January 2016 was already sitting at 54% , with the youth making up 64% of the country’s total population, this statistics is alarming. Falling under this youth population and it scares her that 10-20 years from now the youth will be expected to be running this country but with this unemployment rate what kind of country will that be?
Boitumelo wants to be the change in making sure that this unemployment rate decreases, she may not create 1000’s of jobs but one job can be created through information and knowledge sharing and basic understanding of energy sources; this one job to someone can feed three families and bring hope to so many more people.
The world’s population is increasing daily, our country’s population is increasing daily, energy demand is forever increasing as a result of the population growth and new technologies, therefore a need to increase our sources for energy and in order for us to know how to do that we must go back to the basics of educating ourselves about the energy sector(renewable and nonrenewable) and this is the gap Boitumelo Sehlake wants to close.
